Things Look Good For Organic Food
2005
Awaiting revision 2007
Last month I commented on the
increasing tendency of governments in various parts of the world to
promote fruit and vegetable consumption. In the UK at least, there
is more good news!
Margaret Beckett, the new environment secretary, has said in her
first speech that she wants to see the environment at the forefront
of agriculture and other countryside matters.
The government is thinking "BSE... foot and mouth... what the
heck next?"
Beckett's words were confirmed by Whitehall (i.e. civil servants),
who agreed that the environment was being put centre stage;
agricultural decisions would now be taken against a background of
social and environmental considerations.
Agricultural Revolution If
their words are put into action - and let's hope they are - this
would mark a revolution in the UK's approach to agriculture.
For many years, agriculture has been shaped by government or
European subsidies which have made many - especially large -
farmers rich, and have de-natured the land.
Less is Less... Look at the figures
- British farmers receive £3 billion in subsidies to produce food
worth only £6 billion. Is it any wonder that farmers chase the
subsidies? In the past there were cases of farmers buying large
tracts of land just to grow nothing on - so they qualified for
over-generous EU 'setaside' subsidy.
Organic is Rocketing Looking back ten
years, it is hard to believe just how popular organic food has
become in the UK.
Sainsbury's, for example, Britain's second largest supermarket
chain, now has an organic range of over one thousand products; from
cheese and butter to fresh herbs; from pesto sauce to ready-cook
pizzas; from tea and coffee to wine, beer and spirits; and from
breakfast cereals to ice cream, yoghurts, and fifty varieties
of
baby foods.
The message to farmers? Forget the subsidies - go for the improved
profit margins of organic food! In the year to April 2000,
sales of organic food in the UK grew by a staggering 55%!
OK - not easy for many of today's beleagured farmers to change
course; but the movement is in that direction. And for many
farmers, their existing income has been slashed by all manner of
negative influences. If existing farmers don't tread this new path,
they will be replaced by those who
will.
Cold Organics OK - much of the
supermarkets' "fresh" organic produce is kept in airless
fridges for 6 months or longer to ensure continuity of supply
- but at least it is available, and it is organic.
If you can - find a non-supermarket source. Or try to grow some of
your own.
Government Sees
Sense? Margaret Beckett, no-doubt, has the bill for BSE
firmly in mind - an estimated £8 billion ($11 billion). This is
more than the £6 billion quoted above for the total value of food
produced annually by farmers in the UK.
A re-assessment only makes sense. Maybe the political will is there
now it has cost taxpayers so much money.
Let's hope so.
Population Sees Sense? Then we might
all start looking for quality food to spend a reasonable amount of
money on. Rather than what the UK tends to do - chase low prices
and buy low quality.
The real cost of such cheap food is that it damages the environment
and our health. For example, hundreds of tons of chemical
fertilizers and pesticides pour onto the land, and then into the
sea; and new diseases spring up which we would prefer not to
imagine.
