Obesity - Part 2
Question: Is
there a lot of hot air talked about weight loss?
Answer: Yes.
Search on the Internet for "weight loss" and you come up with
any number of "remedies" - often in a single capsule or tablet
- which promise success.
This belies the fact that being overweight is often - probably
usually - a very complex situation.
Physical and Emotional
Causes It is complex because there are usually a
combination of factors involved - physical and
mental/emotional.
The emotional factors mean that when you find it difficult to
lose weight, you may start punishing or hating yourself.
If you do this, you are really piling on the emotional
pressure. You can just end up making yourself feel more and
more guilty. That is just no good at all!
Be Kind To Yourself The
answer to this is to go easy on yourself. Keep reminding
yourself that you are doing the best you can in the
circumstances in which you find yourself.
Criticise yourself and you'll just make it harder to get to the
point where you can lose weight.
To help yourself when you notice you are criticising yourself
for not being successful...
...DON'T JUDGE YOURSELF one way or the other. In other words,
don't decide you are right or wrong. That does no good at all.
And it simply holds you back from being successful.
Simply step back mentally - this gets you away from your
emotions - and say to yourself; "Ah yes - I'm criticising
myself". Just being aware of what you are doing is the most
useful thing you can do.
Observe Your
Thoughts
Over time, this simple practice of being
aware of your thoughts will be very helpful to you.
Accept that your "bad" habits are perfectly OK.
At the same time, you may choose to head towards changing some
of them. That's OK too!
"This is a healthier attitude than "What a terrible person I am
for not being able instantly to change that bad habit."
Just get away from criticism and thoughts of failure. You'll
still have some of those thoughts, but just step back and
observe them from a distance - as if they were someone else's
thoughts. Just practice - it'll soon become habit.
Be Happy There can
always be something you want to change about yourself.
If you keep criticising yourself for not being perfect - then
you will never be happy for all your life! That just cannot
be right!
So learn to accept yourself as an imperfect being, trying their
best. And if something doesn't work... try something else!!
Weight Loss 3-Step
Plan Here's a 3-step plan which may help you with losing
weight.
-
Firstly, if you have
underlying health issues -
you need to See a
Practitioner in Alternative
Healthcare to get
yourself sorted.
See a doctor too,
certainly; but remember you
don't have to do
what they say. Listen to
their advice, certainly;
but don't be pushed into
anything you don't
want.
It is your life and your
health - take what the
doctor says, see an
alternative practitioner,
and then *you* decide what
you are going to do for
your health.
-
Decide To Get
Healthy.
Commit yourself to being
healthy and happy. And part
of that just happens to
involve... - being lighter
than you are right now!
Focus on what you want for
your health in general,
rather than on losing
weight. Trust that you will
lose weight as you sort out
your general health.
For your general health, my
first recommendation
is:
i) Colon
Cleansing This often
seems to help so many
people, that it is a good
cleanse to start with. I
recommend a 3 month Colon
Cleansing Programme.
Secondly, I recommend:
ii) Liver
Cleansing Again,
many people appear to
benefit from this
cleansing. It does help to
ensure that the Liver works
well, and that benefits the
whole body.
These two cleanses will be
a great start for future
good health.

Your Diet - What You
Eat
For most overweight people,
diet is key.
There are many different
dietary approaches. You
have to find one which
suits you.
Reducing calories is one
approach which works for
some. The "Weight Watchers"
method uses this approach,
for example, combined with
psychological and emotional
support from other
overweight people.
Others find this approach
does not suit them. And it
is true that the body may
adjust its metabolism after
a while so that the amount
of weight lost reduces.
There are other dietary
approaches which often
produce weight loss as a
beneficial side-effect of
changing your lifestyle.
Here are some examples of
these approaches to
improving health. Try out
one which appeals to
you.

Improve
Your Lifestyle - And Lose Weight Here is some
general information on naturopathic diet:
www.specialist-herbal.com/html/2__dietary_guidelines.html
And here are some examples of the dietary approaches mentioned
above, which often help people to lose weight - and, more
importantly, keep it off.
-
The Rotation Diet by Martin
Katahn. This is a diet
which starts from the
principle that if you
reduce your calories, you
initially lose weight, then
the body lowers its
metabolic rate to
compensate for the lower
amount of food being eaten,
and the weight loss
stops.
The Rotation Diet fools
your body by first putting
you on a low calorie diet
for long enough to lose
weight. Then, before the
body can adjust its
metabolic rate, you change
to moderate-calorie diet
for a short time, then to a
normal diet. The 'cycle'
takes - from memory -
either 3 or 6 weeks.
You can get the book from
Amazon, and if you read the
online users' reviews
there, you will find that
most are complimentary.
-
Food Combining" Diets. By
changing your diet, weight
is often lost. One reason
is that the diet can make
you think more about what
you are eating. You may
then tend to make healthier
decisions about your
food.
Food Combining is a way of
eating where you make it
easier for your digestion
by avoiding eating starches
and protein at the same
meal. So - no egg on toast;
no bangers and mash.
Basically, you have all
fruit or all salad or
vegetables at a meal; or
you have either
starch (eg baked potato)
*or* protein (chicken, or
cheese) with salad,
vegetables, or both.

Habgood

The Biogenic Food Combining
Diet by Leslie Kenton
-
The Beverley Hills Diet by
Judy Mazel
-
Fit For Life by Harvey and
Marilyn Diamond
The last three have recipe
books associated with
them.

Other
Ideas To Help You To Lose Weight
For most people, losing weight is simply a matter of eating
less of the food which puts weight on.
(I know there are a few exceptional people who eat little,
but still manage to put weight on - but this is a very small
proportion.)
How you manage to eat less depends on what works for you. Some
ideas are:
-
Keep fruit near to you at
all times - and eat it, of
course!
-
Give up tea and coffee,
which are debilitating.
Instead, drink
at least 1 litre (2 pints)
of water a day. Keep fruit
juice (no added sugar)
nearby at all times.
-
Change some other habits as
well as your eating habits.
Walk more; or get a dog!
Give up snacking, or snack
on fruit.
-
Do a vegetarian or "healthy
eating" cookery course; or
invest in some gourmet
vegetarian cookery books -
and focus on the recipes
without tons of cheese.
-
If your weight goes up and
down from month to month,
weigh yourself every week.
Then, the instant you go
over a weight you have
decided upon, immediately
do whatever is
necessary to get back
down to the weight you
want.
Then... relax again, and
keep weighing yourself
weekly!
